We are a full service small animal hospital serving Eagle River, Wisconsin, and the surrounding Northwoods for over 20 years. 

We have invested in modern diagnostic and therapeutic equipment to assist our patients in living an optimal state of health.   Since each patient is unique we often recommend special tests or procedures in order to come to a definitive diagnosis as soon as possible.

    Christina Schwanke, DVM

    Dr. Tina Schwanke graduated from Phelps High School in 1999 at which time she began working at the practice as a student. She went on to graduate from Edgewood College in Madison with a bachelors degree in biology. She graduated from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2009 after completing her fourth year clinical rotation at the University of Wisconsin.

    Dr. Tina has a strong interest in anesthesia, surgery,and emergency and critical care medicine. In her free time, she enjoys planning her next get away to southern, more tropical climates. She resides in Eagle River and is married to Tim Schwanke, a native of Eagle River. They share their home with two naughty kitties, Bernice and Laverne and two french bulldogs, Rosy and Gucci.

    Cheryl Matuszewski, DVM

    Dr. Cheryl Matuszewski earned her Bachelor of Science from Purdue University in 1996 and graduated from The University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine in 2000.   Dr. Cheryl has over twelve years of veterinary experience and prides herself on being a dedicated small animal practitioner, caring for her patients as she would her own pets.   When asked what she enjoys most about her profession, Dr. Cheryl responded,  "interacting with a variety of people and their pets.   The constant evolution of veterinary medicine and continuing education.   It is an honor to be entrusted with the care of a pet family member."

    Dr. Cheryl recently moved to Eagle River from the La Crosse area where she was an active member of the Coulee Region Veterinary Medical Association, serving two terms as president elect.   She is also a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association and The American Association of Feline Practitioners.   Dr. Cheryl, her partner and stepdaughter share their home with two dogs, Pilot and Casey, and two cats, Gidjet  and Henry. She enjoys spending time with her family, cycling, fishing, hiking and camping.

    Kelly Dvorak, Hospital Manager; BS, CVT

    Growing up in Decorah, Iowa,  Kelly knew early on she wanted to work with animals.  Her fondest childhood memories are caring for cats, deer, sheep, dogs, snakes and horses on her parent's land.

    Kelly went on to earn her bachelors degree in science from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse.  She is a certified veterinary technician and animal control officer.   She has been working in the veterinary field since 1998 and has experience in emergency and small animal practice, as well as with her local humane society.   

    Kelly, with her partner and 12 year old daughter, moved to the area to work in a professional, caring and compassionate veterinary practice, alongside highly skilled doctors and staff members.   The beautiful scenery combined with the feeling of community helped make the decision to move easy.  They are big fishing enthusiasts, bikers and hikers, and always enjoy good food and good company. They have 3 dogs and 2 cats.

    Carol Gilomen, Certified Veterinary Technician

    Carol has been a mainstay here at Eagle River Animal Hospital.   She first started as a school to work student in 1987 from Northland Pines High School where she developed a strong interest in small animal and equine medicine.   Carol went on to veterinary technician school at Madison in 1988.   She graduated from MATC as a Certified Veterinary Technician in 1990.    Her first position was at a small animal practice in Northern Illinois.   She then married her high school sweetheart and returned back to Eagle River.   Carol has always had a strong passion for horses and worked with an equine vet for 6 years before having her first child.  

    Carol rejoined our team in 2005 and is one of our two CVTs on staff.   She has an interest in surgery, anesthesia and pain management, and would like to become board certified in anesthesia.   She shares her home with her husband, son, daughter, 1 horse, 2 dogs, 4 cats and 2 rabbits.  Her hobbies include 4-wheeling, horseback riding and spending time with her family and friends.

    Early interests - Vet/animal and non-vet/earlier work - I have always had a love for animals.  My daughter also shared that interest and was showing horses at 3 years of age. She received a degree in Equine Science.

    Deb Palmer, CVT

    Deb began her veterinary medical career in 1993 at Argosy University.     She later taught veterinary medicine for 7 years at Minnesota School of Business.  In 2012 she relocated to Eagle River and joined Eagle River Animal Hospital where she is now 1 of 2 Certified Veterinary Technicians.

    Deb has a passion for raising and caring for orphaned kittens.   She takes them in and bottle feeds and weans them so they can find their forever homes.   Deb has a strong interest in feline medicine and client education.  She serves a vital role in educating clients on their new puppy or kitten,  animal behavior, animal nutrition and husbandry.   

    Deb lives with her significant other along with 4 cats and a yellow lab.   In her free time she enjoys fishing, bow hunting, gardening and reading.

    Home - Eva grew up in Michigan's beautiful upper peninsula where she spent her entire childhood and early adult years.
    Interests - Eva has always been very passionate about animals. Starting at about the age of 4 she said she wanted to be a veterinarian.  Her childhood was spent happily surrounded by dogs, cats, her pony, a variety of
    rodents and other assorted farm animals.
    Education -  K-12 was spent at Watersmeet School.  State College of Beauty Culture in Wausau, WI. Certified nursing assistant; completed numerous Animal Science courses.
    Veterinary Work - Dunn Animal Hospital in Rhinelander, WI (5 years) Volunteered at various animal shelters and animal welfare and rescue work .
    How long at ERAH -  Since 1999
    Community involvement - Guardian member of the ASPCA. Yoga certification. Master yoga training with Parayoga.
    Personality - Fun loving, easy going and loves to laugh.
    Additional goals - Continue to work with animals and animal communication and increase her knowledge in this field.  Eva plans to continue with her yoga training and teaching. She would also like to attain the distinction of Master Gardener.
    Eva's philosophy of life - To tread lightly on this Earth. Do not expect that someone else or a material object can make you happy - true happiness comes from within.

    Early interest in animals - Always had a compassion for animals since I was young.
    I would push my cat around the yard in a buggy dressed in baby clothes!
